Father of Modern Search Technology

Gerard Salton
Professor
PhD Harvard University, 1958

Gerard Salton (8 March 1927 in Nuremberg - 28 August 1995) was a Professor of Computer Science at Cornell University. Salton was perhaps the leading computer scientist working in the field of information retrieval during his time. His group at Cornell developed the SMART Information Retrieval System.

Salton was born Gerhard Anton Sahlmann on March 8, 1927 in Nuremberg, Germany. He received a Bachelor's (1950) and Master's (1952) degree in mathematics from Brooklyn College, and a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1958, the last of Howard Aiken's doctoral students, and taught there until 1965, when he joined Cornell University and co-founded its department of Computer Science. He was editor-in-chief of the Communications of the ACM and the Journal of the ACM, and chaired SIGIR.

Salton was an ACM Fellow (elected 1995), received an Award of Merit from the American Society for Information Science (1989), and was the first recipient of the SIGIR Award for outstanding contributions to study of information retrieval (1983) -- now called the Gerard Salton Award.

Gerard Salton, who died on August 28th of 1995, was the father of modern search technology. His teams at Harvard and Cornell developed the SMART informational retrieval system. Salton’s Magic Automatic Retriever of Text included important concepts like the vector space model, Inverse Document Frequency (IDF), Term Frequency (TF), term discrimination values, and relevancy feedback mechanisms.

He authored a 56 page book called A Theory of Indexing which does a great job explaining many of his tests upon which search is still largely based. Tom Evslin posted a blog entry about what it was like to work with Mr. Salton.

SEO Facts

Having a web site and not being listed in the search engines is like having a brick and mortar business and not being listed in the Yellow Pages.

If you want to be found on the web - you must be listed in the search engines.

With all the hype that surrounds this issue, we thought it a good idea to provide some insight into what's fact and what's fiction - concerning search engine optimization and ranking.

SEO Facts:
  • Google takes between 6 and 8 months to list your site.
    • It's called "aging" and Google wants to insure that sites it includes are being maintained and were not abandoned.
  • Do not wait to get the SEO started.
  • SEO ranking is determined by your content and age of your site.
  • Yahoo, MSN and other search engines are getting smarter and just because you currently hold a decent SE ranking does not mean your site will even be listed tomorrow.
  • Google is THE search engine and the word Google has been officially included in the dictionary. It's what people know and use.
  • Google provides results to many other search engines. If you're not included in Google, you're probably not included in many other high end search engines.
  • Search engine ranking is achieved by professional and ethical techniques that will insure you achieve a legitimate page ranking, for years to come.

Why SEO Need ???

When SEO Is Required :

If you still think that having a website alone is enough, you probably miss the boat being found on the top of the search engines and directories. What is the purpose to be ranked 349 in a search engine?

Try to key-in a key phrase to find you own website, can you find it in the first page results of search engines? Probably not! Hence, that's no problem at least you know now why you need SEO for your website!

If you want your site to be found, then you must optimize it for search; and basically, that means you must make it visible to search engines. Web sites in today's competitive business market that are not optimized for search don't have much of a chance of being found by potential customers; and that goes for non-business sites as well.

There's really no excuse for not doing search engine optimization. If you go through the trouble of making a web site, then your intention probably is for that web site to be found. SEO just is the process that helps this happen.

When SEO is not Required :
1. If your website is very specific for certain group of audience and does not require too much of public intervention then yes u do not require SEO. e.g. sites of universities and organizations especially made for students and employees resp.

2. When ur site already ranking well in the search engines, due to brand name etc, and you're satisfied with the traffic n sales the u don't require SEO.

3. When you facing some business fallouts, then u need to concentrate ur resources n energy elsewhere rather than SEO.

4.If you are planning to revamp or redesign your whole site again then go for SEO only after you have restructured your site again.

Web sites are being created with Java, Flash and images all of which search engines can not understand and ignore. If the content of your website is ignored by the search engines then they can't index your site, If your site isn't indexed then no one will find your site by searching for it in Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. If no one can find your site then your hard work and money spent creating the site is in vain.
